Our History

Introduction
   
Lala is a Town Committee in district of Hailakandi, Assam. The Lala Town is divided into 10 wards for which elections are held every 5 years for ward commissioner. The Lala Town Committee has population of 11,771 of which 5,827 are males while 5,944 are females as per report released by Census India 2011. Population of Children with age of 0-6 is 1183 which is 10.05 % of total population of Lala (TC). In Lala Town Committee, Female Sex Ratio is of 1020 against state average of 958. Moreover Child Sex Ratio in Lala is around 943 compared to Assam state average of 962. Literacy rate of Lala city is 94.30 % higher than state average of 72.19 %. In Lala, Male literacy is around 96.38 % while female literacy rate is 92.27 %. Lala Town Committee has total administration over 2,526 houses to which it supplies basic amenities like water and sewerage & street light. It is also authorized to build roads within Lala Town Committee limits and impose taxes on properties coming under its jurisdiction. Total geographical area of Lala town committee is 4 km2. Population density of the city is 2803 persons per km2. There are 10 wards in the city, among them Lala Ward No 03 is the most populous ward with population of 1973 and Lala Ward No 05 is the least populous ward with population of 698. Nearest railway station is Lala Bazar which is within the Town area. District head quarter of the Town is Hailakandi which is 17 km away. Dispur (guwahati) is the state head quarter of the Town and is 382 km far from here. Yearly average rainfall of the city is 2465 mm. Maximum temperature here reaches up to 35°C and minimum temperature goes down to 8°C.

Religion wise distribution of population :
   
Hindus contribute 91% of the total population and are the largest religious community in the city followed by Muslims which contribute 7% of the total population and Jains are the third largest religious community here with 2% population.. Female Sex ratio per 1000 male in Hindus are 1038 in Muslims are 831 and in Jains are 946.

Growth of population:
   
Population of the Town has increased by 14.6% in last 10 years. In 2001 census total population here were about 10 thousand. Female population growth rate of the city is 17% which is 4.7% higher than male population growth rate of 12.3%. General caste population has increased by 14.6%; Schedule caste population has increased by 13.7%; Schedule Tribe population has increased by 316.7% and child population has decreased by -5.1% in the city since last census.

As of 2011 census there are 1020 females per 1000 male in the city. Sex ratio in general caste is 1026, in schedule caste is 995 and in schedule tribe is 667. There are 943 girls under 6 years of age per 1000 boys of the same age in the city. Overall sex ratio in the city has increased by 40 females per 1000 male during the years from 2001 to 2011. Child sex ratio here has increased by 14 girls per 1000 boys during the same time.

Literacy:
   
Total 9984 people in the town are literate, among them 5029 are male and 4955 are female. Literacy rate (children under 6 are excluded) of Lala is 94%. 96% of male and 92% of female population are literate here. Overall literacy rate in the town has increased by 4%. Male literacy has gone up by 2% and female literacy rate has gone up by 5%.
